Thank You, Fund for Teachers!!!!

Last December, Nancy Vasso (DC Middle School) and I found out about a wonderful organization called "Fund for Teachers". "Fund for Teachers" is an organization started by Mr. Raymond Plank, founder and Chairman of the Board of the Apache Corporation. "Fund for Teachers" is a foundation whose mission is to enrich the professional lives of school teachers by providing recognition and opportunities for renewal thereby improving their classroom practice and benefiting their students on a daily basis.

Mrs. Vasso and I wrote a grant that we called "The Immigration Experience". We both have a strong interest in the immigration experience and wanted to know more about what the experience must have felt like. We thought that required traveling to Ellis Island in New York City Harbor, visiting the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, visiting the Statue of Liberty, taking a historical tour of New York City, visiting the New York Historical Museum, visiting the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and taking a trip to Newcomers' High School in New York City (Queens) - a high school for today's immigrant teenagers.

In March, we were notified that we had been awarded this fellowship!!!!!!! We are thrilled and the purpose of this blog is to let you know about our trip. We will be going on our New York City Immigration Adventure from Monday, June 19th through Tuesday, June 27th.
Stay tuned............

These pictures are of our Prairie Vale fifth graders as they are going through their Ellis Island Day. One of the goals of the "Fund for Teachers" grant was to find out even more information about this experience and to create even more realistic components to this experience.
